Philip Emerson, psychoanalytic trainee at Hanna Perkins, earns statewide social work honor

April 12, 2022

SHAKER HEIGHTS – Phillip Emerson, LISW, MSW, was named the 2021 Emerging Leader in Social Work by the Ohio Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). The award follows similar regional recognition late last year by the organization’s Cleveland chapter.

A psychotherapist with a private practice in Lakewood, Emerson is enrolled in the Cleveland Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Training Program at Hanna Perkins Center.

The Emerging Leader award honors an NASW member who has been in practice for five years or less, and has demonstrated outstanding contributions as a leader at the beginning of their social work career.

Fluent in Spanish, he was honored for work he did to support immigrant families following raids in Ohio by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in 2018. That work included emergency first-stage mental health services, and assistance connecting the families to ongoing mental health services. He also participated in an NASW-sponsored peer consultation hotline for other social workers who wanted to provide support to the affected families.

“I’m grateful to have received this honor, but I was just one participant. This recognition deserves to be shared with everybody who coordinated and provided help,” Emerson said.

Emerson, 48, left a career in academics in 2016 to study social work at Cleveland State University’s Master of Social Work program. He earned his social work license in 2018 and began psychoanalytic training through Hanna Perkins in 2019.
