
On our longer walks I always used to push her in the stroller. I still do, but increasingly she rides her little balance bike, zooming ahead of me then waiting for me to catch up.
And it took me longer than it should have to realize the appeal: Freedom.
The ability to stop and look at an interesting bug or stick whenever you want to, the ability to drag your foot through a puddle as you pass it, the ability to determine how fast or slow you move through the world.
The ability to control, in one small pocket, your destiny and fate.
It’s another step into growing up, another step away from her parents.
Another moment to cheer and let my heart crack a little.
