Training is designed to help summer camp teachers understand school-aged appropriate behaviors and how to respond to those behaviors that are not age appropriate. We will discuss forming relationships, encouraging independence and setting rules for safety and respect.

Participants will learn about what makes a summer program successful, how to help school age children enjoy their summer, be safe, and become responsible and self-resilient.

This program is approved by the State of Ohio and is aligned with Ohio’s Step Up to Quality (SUTQ) standards.

Objectives

  1. Participants will define what is a summer day camp and identify the benefits to children when they attend a summer day camp.
  2. Participants will identify age appropriate behavior expectations for children 6-12 years of age, in order to respond appropriately to difficult behaviors. Participants will understand how to help children calm down when they are having a difficult time, and identify ways to encourage social abilities in school age children and form nurturing relationships.
  3. Participants will discuss and identify ways to encourage independence in children, while also creating rules that will keep the children safe and respectful to others.
  4. Participants will work in groups to discuss case examples and solve how to guide the child in the example, using the information learned during the training.
