This training will help teachers identify the skills needed to work effectively with young children. We will review NAEYC competencies and discuss how to practice them. We will provide strategies to participants, and give examples of how to implement the strategies in the classroom. The training includes group discussion and presentations.

Objectives

Participants will discuss the many different skills a teacher needs to acquire, the extra skills an early childhood teacher needs to possess in order to be effective when working with preschool children.

Participants will review  the current NAEYC proposed Teacher Competencies(draft) and understand why these are important  to their daily practices, and discover ways to demonstrate the competencies while teaching young children.

  • Competency: 2.3 Uses local, state and national professional resources to evaluate and improve practices. Uses quality standards when making decisions about program planning.
Participants will identify how to apply teaching strategies, understanding that the most important and effective strategy is “matching”. Deciding the strategy that best meets the situation. Participants will discuss NAEYC 10 effective DAP teaching strategies and share examples of how they demonstrate the strategy in their daily classroom routines.

Participants will reflect on their own practices and identify the skills/competencies that make them a better teacher; if there are any skills/competencies they would add to those discussed in the training, and identify the strategies they have used that are most effective. Participants will present their findings to the group.

Participants will evaluate the session, identifying what they will use in their professional practice, make suggestions for further trainings.
