Types of Treatment

After an evaluation, one of the following types of treatment services may be recommended.

At Hanna Perkins an evaluation can take between 4 to 10 meetings and will consist of parent and child sessions.

Developmental Guidance

Developmental Guidance involves regular appointments between parents and a therapist.  These sessions focus on parenting strategies that will help with a child’s developmental needs.

Treatment-via-the-Parent in the Hanna Perkins School

In this treatment strategy, young children (under age 5 or 6) enrolled in the Hanna Perkins School are typically not seen in individual treatment.  Rather, we have found it more effective and natural for the parent, rather than another adult, to be the one to help the young child with difficulties and concerns.  Treatment-via-the-parent involves weekly sessions between a parent and a therapist in which they think together about the child’s difficulties and plan how the parent can intervene in a developmentally helpful way.  This often involves helping a child put words to feelings.  The therapeutic intervention takes place at home, in the day-to-day relationship between parent and child with the School serving as a supportive environment for this work to occur.

Psychotherapy

School-age children and adolescents in psychotherapy may be seen once or twice a week at Hanna Perkins.  Psychotherapy involves individual sessions between child and therapist, with regular parent sessions scheduled separately.  This arrangement ensures the child’s privacy during this work while allowing the parent, child, and therapist to work together as a treatment team.  Work is based on the child’s wish for help and ability to participate, and is undertaken at the child’s pace.

Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis provides children the opportunity to work through and overcome difficulties that result from internal or unconscious conflicts that may have roots in earlier experiences.  Much like psychotherapy, psychoanalysis relies upon the treatment team of child, therapist, and parent as parental support for the work is essential.  Sessions are scheduled more frequently to enhance the development of a unique relationship with the therapist wherein feelings, behaviors, and perceptions can be looked at more closely and where conflicts that are not fully conscious to the child can become recognized and addressed.

Psychological Testing

For children involved in our School or Clinic, we can provide psychological testing that can help in the formulation of treatment and/or academic decisions.

Tutoring

Teachers from the Hanna Perkins School utilize their depth of experience in helping children learn by working as tutors with children of all ages.  Like all of our treatment and intervention programs, our tutoring model is relationship-based.  After an initial evaluation session (or sessions), parents and child are asked to commit to period of tutorial work that may extend over several weeks so that an optimal understanding of learning strategies can be achieved and integrated.
