Memorial Tributes to Esteemed Colleagues

Between March and September of 2002 members of the Hanna Perkins community and friends throughout the world were aggrieved by the deaths of three of our most revered and beloved colleagues, Marion Barnes, Erna Furman, and Robert Furman.  In the deaths of these three esteemed colleagues Hanna Perkins lost the combined experience base of nearly 150 years of service to our organization.

All three had been a part of Hanna Perkins from the first years of its existence.  All had worked in “Children’s House,” the “house with the red door,” as Hanna Perkins was first known, and all played a part in the planning and move to our former location in Cleveland’s University Circle.  All three participated in all of our research projects, worked annually with parents of children in the school, and taught courses and supervised the candidates in our training program in child analysis.  All three played an instrumental role over the past several years in supporting the re-invigoration of our Center, as the programs in our School and Clinic expanded and as our candidate base and pool of clinic associates swelled to a point that we have outgrown our current facility.  All three were unequivocal in their support of our future, including our relocation to the Malvern School building in Shaker Heights.

While Hanna Perkins was remarkably fortunate to have had the benefit of the contributions of these individuals for such a long period of time, their commitment and involvement followed a path that had originally been blazed by the founder of Hanna Perkins, Dr. Anny Katan, who remained active as an analyst and visited in the School until she reached 90 years of age.  Such longevity and commitment is rare and is an indication of the degree to which all of these remarkable people believed in and devoted their lives to Hanna Perkins and to psychoanalysis.  Even as we continue to miss each of them, we recall the tremendous strength of character they possessed, character that led them to determinedly persevere in their work and involvement with the Center to the last days of their lives.

Through the following links information about the lives and work of these founders of Hanna Perkins are made available, including information shared at their respective memorial services.
