Training In Child
& Adolescent Psychoanalysis
Course
in Child Psychoanalysis - Clinical, Theoretical and Applied
Since 1958 the Faculty of the Hanna
Perkins Center (previously known as “The Cleveland Center for Research in Child
Development”) has offered the Course in Child Psychoanalysis - Clinical,
Theoretical and Applied, utilizing its Psychoanalytic Child Therapy Clinic
and the facilities of the Hanna Perkins Therapeutic School.

The
Course provides:
- A thorough
grounding in the theory of psychoanalysis, encompassing its use as a
scientific model of personality growth and functioning, as a method of
treatment, and as a unique research tool. The study of Freud’s
and others’
historic work is blended with recent contributions to provide a well-rounded
theoretical basis for understanding children of all ages and adults, the
latter primarily in their development and functioning as parents.
- The
psychoanalytic treatment of individual children of all ages and work with
their parents in the context of a consideration of the family as a whole.
- The treatment of
pre-latency-age children by way of their parents, in which the child analyst
helps parents help their young child master emotional problems that may be
developmental, neurotic or related to specific stresses. This treatment
modality was developed at the Hanna Perkins School. In addition to the weekly
sessions with the parents and direct observation of the child in his school
group, this work involves close regular contact with the teachers, affording
an opportunity to apply and integrate psychoanalytic understanding with the
child’s
changing educational needs in school and home.
- Evaluation of
child and parents, leading to diagnosis and choice of therapeutic
intervention. All case assessments include use of (or are base on) the
metapsychological diagnostic profile.
- Application of
psychoanalytic theory and methods in the field of mental health. This focuses
on understanding the special needs of children (e.g. acutely or chronically
ill; afflicted with bodily defects; intellectually, emotionally or
socio-economically deprived; cared for in institutions, foster homes or
adoptive families) and helping those who care for them to adapt their handling
accordingly. This area is not only included in the didactic seminars and
clinical work but learned through participation in the Center’s
and School’s
Extension Service and Outreach programs which include ongoing work with child
care centers, schools, hospital, and other community facilities for children.
- Principles and
methodology of psychoanalytic research. Instruction in the use of the
Metapsychological Diagnostic Profile and participation in the Center’s
and School’s
ongoing research activities and projects. The Metapsychological Profile had
its origins in the work of Anna Freud and her colleagues at Hampstead. At
Hanna Perkins the Profile has been further adapted for work with nursery
school age children and toddlers, and a detailed section on the assessment of
parental functioning has been added.
